The Culprit behind the pop

The crack noise heard during a chiropractic adjustment is primarily attributed to a phenomenon called synovial joint cavitation. The by-products produced in the formation of synovial fluid are oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide (CO2). During an adjustment, the spinal joints are opened very slightly, causing a drop in pressure in the synovial fluid between joints. This results in a release of a gas and that signature “POP” sound.

If you do not hear a noise when receiving an adjustment, it doesn’t necessarily mean it did not work. It just means that there was no sound from the gas escaping the joint.

Is it possible to have a different type of chiropractic adjustment without hearing the crack/pop?

There is an old saying “If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. Chiropractors actually use many different types of techniques with many of them that do not produce a cavitation or audible noise.
